0. TL:DR

The following is a selection of some of the design relevant to Narrative Design for a a game I worked on. It is not the full design, but it should give an idea of how I work holistically with design and how I merge Narrative Design with Systems and Mechanics.

1. World/Universe

The world of Nature Heroes is a small contained island. You could think of it as a snow globe world.

This world deals with environmental issues similar to the real world. Specifically, the island has issues around littering, deforestation, and the island’s humans' awareness of those issues.

Even though Nature Heroes mostly follow the natural laws we know from real life, it contain a pinch of the supernatural. A nature spirit roams the island. The spirit is concerned about the humans’ impact on the island.

The island consists of three distinct and delimited environments:

The island is surrounded by a body of water.

2. Story

The island is suffering under its human inhabitants. Humans are littering the beach and chopping down the trees. It damages the environment and makes it difficult for animals to thrive.

The island spirit. a hummingbird called Hum has grown concerned for the island and wants to change things. It's just that Hum normally can't communicate with humans. Luckily Hum finds our player. A special person who can communicate with Hum. Finally, something can be done.

Together with Hum, it is now up to the player to help the island environment and its animals.

3 Characters

3.1 The player

The player is playing as herself and has therefore no avatar in the world that needs to be controlled. The player interacts with the world by clicking a mix of intractable objects and UI.
